About us

Lower Austria owes an essential part of its reputation as a scene of culture to artists. As of June 2012, ZEIT KUNST NIEDERÖSTERREICH will pursue new perspectives as the Gallery of Lower Austria to take account of the important role and quality of their production.

ZEIT KUNST NIEDERÖSTERREICH will present monographic exhibitions and ambitious publications on the work of artists who live in Lower Austria or have close connections with this state and whose oeuvre enjoys supraregional or international esteem. Special attention will also be paid to artists whose work has hitherto only been taken note of insufficiently because of the dynamic development of the art and exhibition scene under the influence of various tendencies. ZEIT KUNST NIEDERÖSTERREICH aims at highlighting outstanding artistic positions and lastingly ensuring the reception of Austrian contemporary art.

New exhibition spaces will be made accessible under the common brand ZEIT KUNST NIEDERÖSTERREICH at two locations in Lower Austria’s central region: first, at the secularized Dominican Church in the center of Krems, whose adjacent monastery wing accommodates museumkrems, the city museum; second, the Shedhalle located in the Kulturbezirk St. Pölten, which was built by Hans Hollein and forms an architectural ensemble with the Landesmuseum Niederösterreich, the Museum of Lower Austria, since 2002. Both exhibition spaces, which are part of Lower Austria’s system of museum institutions, were structurally adapted to the requirements of ZEIT KUNST NIEDERÖSTERREICH by the architects Lukas & Fritz Göbl /Franz Gschwantner and Team BWM to guarantee a contemporary form of presentation. The interaction of the medieval sacral architecture of Krems and the modern museum building in St. Pölten promises to unfold a field of tension in which the encounter with contemporary art is to be both an inspiration and an irritation.
